The Sussex Band of The Royal British Legion
(Horsham)

Clive was born in 1957 to a musical   family. The Longhurst, Liley and Woods families, were (and still are) very much involved in local music, from the Salvation Army (Horsham Corp), to the Horsham Borough Silver Band.

He first picked up an instrument at the age of eight, starting with ‘the Boro’ Band, and continuing with the Forest Boys School Band.

After leaving school, rather than following some of the Woods side of the family into the Royal Marines Bands, Clive chose to join the Parachute Regiment, as a Cornet player in the 3rd Battalion. A shortage of Trombones in 3 Para, however, gave him the opportunity to learn a new instrument, and within three months he was an active member of the band’s Trombone section. Following a change in Bandmasters, Clive felt it was time to move on, and he returned to the Depot, where he took charge of the Regiment’s own printing department.

Since leaving the Army in 1984, Clive has conducted the Godalming Town Band, Chichester City Band, Adur Concert Band and West Chiltington Silver Band, each time standing in for their respective resident Conductor.  He is now Bandmaster in his own right at the Horsham-based Royal British Legion Band.

Although Clive lacks ‘letters’ after his name (and confesses to never having gone to Kneller Hall – except once, in the rain, for a concert!), what he brings to the band is a passion to improve, not only himself, but those around him. In this way, he hopes to make his hobby something for all to enjoy.
